Emil Anderson Construction has been awarded a $23.2-million contract to finish the job on a rockfall-prone slope along Highway 97 near Summerland.
Slope stabilization work has been going on since a massive landslide Aug. 28, 2023, poured 3,000 cubic metres of the hillside onto the highway and forced the Okanaganѻý main link to close for three weeks.
All the digging thatѻý been going on since was just phase 1. Phase 2 will begin in the fall and continue until the spring of 2027.
“Long-term stabilization work will return the highway to its original four-lane configuration,” the Ministry of Transportation and Transit said in a news release.
“This includes building a retaining wall and catchment area at the base of the slope, along with a concrete wall next to the highway for added reinforcement.
Additional rock anchors will also be installed to secure the slope, followed by repairs to the roadѻý surface and drainage improvements.”
Since October 2023, crews have been blasting away unstable rock and have installed more than 100 rock anchors, the release said.
